The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
